Tokyo Rig
« on: September 11, 2018, 10:02:47 AM »
I've been hearing a lot recently about the Tokyo Rig. I have also heard of it being used for "Punch Shotting".

Anyone have any experience with it or feedback on it?

Interesting, I can see that working pretty well on the rock walls too that I fish.
Looks easy enough to make them yourself, so I may try to rig some up.

I haven't had a chance to watch the whole video yet, but figured I'd post it for more info.

Oh OK I didnt know what it was called   I saw Ike at the sportsman show demonstrating it with a fluke type bait   I bought a 50 pack of the wires and split rings  and made a bunch of setups over the winter.  I tried the rig a few times and did catch a few but the wire only came in 6 inch lenghts. kept dredging up grass. Im looking for a 12 inch wire but cant find them.

Does it have to be a stainless wire?  Couldn't you get some like 20 ga galvanized wire from a Hdw store and make your own very easily?  That way you could have any length you want.

I just made one with 22 ga galvanized wire.  It took less then 30 seconds and cost maybe a penny or two.  I'll try to post a pic when I get back from the farm this pm.

i see u left off some crital things like that split ring and swivel.  I found with out the split ring and swivel  I got really bad line twist and threw out more line then the swivel and ring would have cost   just saying.
I used the ss only because it wont rust in my box and I dont like galvenized anything   I think I made 1 rig for around 2.25 and the hook was the big expense
   .30 for wire
   .20. split ring
   .75 swivel
  1.00 hook

plus it gave me something to do when the snow was falling

I'm not sure if the stiffness of the wire matters at all, but I'm guessing that the galvanized wire will be more prone to bending in unwanted ways. Again, not sure f that matters at all, but it's the first thing that came to my mind.

And I believe @bullet20dc is right when it comes to the hardware missing. The swivel, etc. are critical from what I understand, to prevent nasty line twist problems.

On another note, some people are starting to use this rig for punching grass beds and other dense weeds with great success.

Well I have always thought that less was more when it came to rigging baits.  I'll know more after tomorrow.  I know it will bend easier but forming stainless steel wire is a pain the butt.  I hate working with it.  If this doesn't work, I have hundreds of split ring and swivels from making under spins and A rigs.
