Back um up often
« on: November 24, 2017, 07:59:09 AM »
I used to be a fanatic about my waypoint files.  I kept a different file for each lake (6) that I fish.  Every time I got home I would save the file to an sd card, then delete it from the units and purge the units.  When I chose a lake for the next trip, I'd load that file and go.

As new technology came along allowing lots more storage and my old waypoint management software became obsolete, I became lazy and quit backing them up.

A few days ago I was looking at the chart to decide on an area to fish next outing and discovered a bunch of stuff that should not be there.  There were indiscriminate waypoints in places where there should be none and multiples (doubles up to quintuples) of the ones that should be there.  Needless to say my file has been corrupted.

It showed that I have 5600+ wpts when there should be around 2000.

I have been laboriously deleting the garbage waypoints one by one.  I now have it down to one lake that has about 800 wpts so if they are only tripled I still have around 1600 to get rid of.

As soon as I get a clean file I'm going to save it, unhook the units from each other, delete and purge each unit then hook them back up and reload.

I'm thinking I need to find a new software management program and back up the files after every trip.

So my suggestion to you all is back them up often.

Great tip, Jig Man.

What units are you using, and what software have you been using to manage your data?

I run Lowrance.  My software is Map Create 7...out dated won't work.

I'm looking at Insight Planner if I can find a source.

I wound up deleting over 3700 wpts to get a clean file.  I deleted and purged all 3 units then reloaded on console turned other units on and let them load.  It looks good so far.  I'll know more after I fish with it tomorrow.

That's a heck of a lot of work! I hope it all looks good for you when you fish again. I definitely need to start backing up my waypoints. Thanks for the reminder

I finally got them cleaned up.  It took over 5 hours in the boat Friday but the file is down to 2254 wpts which is what I should have.  All units have been deleted and purged then reloaded.  I lake tested it today and the file seems sound.

I never want to experience that again.

Did you happen to tell it to show the "community edits" to make all those additional way points show up if you are using Navionics?

Speaking of Navionics, I personally don't use it. But I know that if I did, I would never share any waypoints. Especially not on the small lakes we fish here in southern New England.

Do any of you actually share them?

Not on purpose.  I'll check to see if it is marked.   Thanks Jack

Not to very many people, just to those with whom I fish.

I don't even tell people where and how I fish except in very vague terms.

I dont do the community edits either.   It may not even share way points, but I know it shares a lot of other info like boat ramps, dangers, etc.

Only thing I might share are hazards. First, I don't trust people to not be throwing out bs info. Second, If I have good spots - I worked to find'em and sure ain't markin'em down for somebody else to be on when I show up....get enough of that just from people watchin' other peoples' action.

just a question cause i was trying to figure out how that could happen. do u put the wp on one unit and share among the 3 like i do. basically what i have on one I have on all 3 units , they are tied together.   is it possible that triples the count even tho you only put the waypoints on one unit.  I really have no idea.   are they all the same or diff on each unit.   I dont know how far off you are on your settings on the unit from factory defaults but it would be real quick to restore to factory defaults  setting   that erases all wp's in one shot   especially if u have them on sd
