Hyd Jackplates..........
« on: February 13, 2015, 11:57:39 AM »
Tell me about them. I'm currently running a 10in man. and I have never really been able to find that "Sweet Spot" and trying to adjust in all the time is a pain in the butt.(May have too much JP for my boat/setup)
That leads me to my Atlas 8in.......This will be my first hyd JP and I have not run any boat with Hyd JP on it.

How should I begin the process learning to drive a boat with a Hyd JP.
Yeah I know it sounds like a rookie question boat but I have never driven a boat with one on it.

I recommend getting a gauge for it. I have to look over my shoulder to see where it is though I am starting to feel where it is at. Will get around to putting one in eventually.

What you will find is that the optimum height will vary depending on water conditions. I love that I can put it all the way down in rough water.....I call it 4 wheel drive for boats and wouldn't have a boat without

First off, I don't have a jackplate on my boat (yet), but my guess is that 10 inches was too much for you boat.

@Coop and @Matt@Fractures could probably give you some sound advice with regard to the size you need. I have an 18 foot G3 with a 150 and I was told 6 inches would be sufficient.

As for the hydraulic aspects of it, I think "give it gas and go" advice is probably spot on. Start with it low and then gradually work your way up. As @Eric Low said, you'll eventually find your sweet spot. And that sweet spot will vary with conditions  ;)

Ok trim motor down till the cavitation plate on the motor is level with the ground. Take a straight??edge??level? And make the bottom of the V in the pad.. Very bottom point of boat level with the center of the prop shaft.. Usually that's where I start.? Might not be right? And if you have a WP gauge.. Trimmed up wide open you should be 12-15 WP.. If you have prop slip.. Adjust prop pitch.  And some cases yeah could be set back to far.? If boat never had one... But my rule of thumb... There's No such thing.!! More!!! Look at underside of cavitation plate.. If not one ya might need.. It's a small tab? Fin? Rutter? You can adjust that as well left or right for torque steer. And help high speed stability..??  Leave it on and figure it out.. It's Worth the effort.!!

So you saying I should set my prop shaft height  to the same height as my pad?   That would make it 0(zero) engine height correct?   And that would be a good place to start?
Is that what your saying?  (hmm)

.  Yes.. 1/4 inch adjust from there.. Up or down depending on WP..  Lower than 12 @ full trim WOT. Adjust down...... WP.. Above 15.. Adjust up.. 1/4 inch @ a run.. That sweet spot might be as little as 1/8 adjust.. So Small adjust run it.. Small adjust run it.. Don't make large adjustments.. Small..

@Jimmy RodandReel did you buy a Bullet, Stroker, or Allison without telling me? Didn't know you was running a sportmaster on that aluminum boat lol. I'd start at least 2.5" below pad with your combination.

I was wondering because that's sounds a touch high.... Seeing Xpress recommend a starting point of about 4in below the pad (hmm) (hmm)

Even with pad is way too high for your combination. @Jimmy RodandReel

After doing a little research, I have come to the conclusion that some of the reply's to this thread are based on a complete lack of knowledge of boat set-ups and in particular my set-up.  :o :o

Some of the advise given in this thread would have fried my new motor as soon as I started to get on plane. >:(  >:(

Thank you to the guys that gave good advice!  \o/ \o/
