Title: Pachaug Pond
Post by: Curt on May 14, 2017, 11:53:50 AM
Fished a club tourney on Pachaug Saturday.

The bite was odd, to say the least. I hadn't pre-fished, so I had no preconceived ideas as to what might work.

I started out fishing in one of the lake's coves, looking to see if maybe there would be bass in some of the weeds, close to spawning areas. I tried everything from top to bottom and had only one small pickerel to show for it.

So I figured it was time to start moving around a bit and trying different things.

I tried another cove with different topography and different weeds. No takers.

Then I decided to try a small rock pile that was in another cove, close to deeper water. Bingo!

Two keeper fish in 10 minutes. One on a 4 inch stick worm fished with a 1/16 bullet weight. The other fish hit a shaky head setup on a 3/16 oz. head.

I fished around the rocks for a little longer with no more bites and then followed a stretch of weeds for 100 yards or so, still with no takers.

Worked my way back to the rock pile and had two more good fish within 15 minutes. So at that time I decided to spend the rest of my day right there, hoping a few more fish might move in and give me my limit.

With about 10 minutes left in the tourney, I felt a tap and set the hook, only to have a small bass come flying out of the water on the hookset  (giggle)

It was only about 6 inches long, so I never did catch my 5th keeper fish. But with the conditions we had, I wasn't too disappointed with what I had in the livewell.

It ended up being enough to win; 4 fish for a tad over 7 lbs.

The rock pile I fished was in 2-4 FOW and literally only covered maybe 150 sq. ft. Not big at all. But it was on a flat right next to deeper water, so it was a perfect spot.

It just goes to show that sometimes the smallest little spots can hold a lot of fish if you stick with them, waiting for the bass to replenish. And this was one of those spots.
