Shallow Water Anchors / Re: Minn Kota Talon Stomp Switches
« Last post by Curt on April 25, 2021, 08:00:42 AM »
I like it with them on opposite sides of the tray. Makes it easier to hit them, since there's plenty of room for my foot.

Also, the down switch requires a firm double press to deploy it, so the chances of accidentally activating it are very, very slim.

Now, if the weather will cooperate, I will actually get a chance to get out there and use all of this new equipment 🙄

Good idea, I hadn’t even considered one on each side.  When I had power poles mine were together.  Sometimes I would step on the wrong one.  A time ot two a rod handle would wind up on a switch and deploy them.

Shallow Water Anchors / Minn Kota Talon Stomp Switches
« Last post by Curt on April 24, 2021, 09:00:09 PM »
I recently installed a second Minn Kota Talon to my boat, giving me a pair of them now  (yes)

I have them paired with each other via Bluetooth, as well as pairing them with two hand-held remotes.

I had been using the standard wireless remotes to operate them. One is mounted at the console. The other is/was mounted on the bow, in the recessed trolling motor tray.

I was getting tired of having to bend over to operate the bow remote, especially if I had to use it while fighting a fish.

So, I decided to get a foot switch.

After doing some homework, I decided to get the Bluetooth Stomp Switches for the Talon/Raptor, not the triangular multi-switch.

I ordered them and got them from West Marine earlier this week.

The next day, I got them installed and paired up, so they operate both Talons at once.

Wow! I can't wait to use them on the water.

A simple double stomp on the Down button deploys both Talons effortlessly. And a single stomp on the Up button retracts them both.

This is going to be a huge upgrade for me

p.s. If you look closely, you can see where I had mounted the standard handheld remote in the recessed trolling motor foot pedal tray.

Bass Boat Trailer Maintenance / Re: More Trailer Woes

I never use my boat in salt water, or even brackish water for that matter.

The issue is mainly with the boxed trailer frames. They never completely dry out inside, so they rust from the inside out.

I've seen 20 year old boat trailers made from c-channel steel that are in perfect condition. They dry quickly, so rust doesn't even get started on them.

Many trailer companies use boxed steel because it costs them less. It's stronger inch for inch, so they can get away with using lighter material. In the end, though, the consumer pays the price for it in trailers that rust out like mine.  (fp)

What is it that causes all of the rust in your part of the world,  salt?  I had my last trailer 14 years and had no problems.  I have a flatbed trailer that is a 1995 model with no rust issues.

I thought you just had a significant trailer reconfiguration within the last couple years?

Yep. 3 years ago I had two new crossmembers welded in and a small piece of the frame repaired.

But you're 100% right. I hate boxed frames for that reason. They rot from the inside.

Now that I'm buying a new trailer that's aluminum, I won't have to worry about that again.  (nope)

That's the inevitable result of a steel tubular frame. It rusts from the inside out. By the time you see the damage, you're screwed.

That's why there's no fixin' it. There's more damage on the inside lookin' to get out that you can't see.

IMO, somebody looking to buy to fix and use is not thinking 'cause they're just gonna burn a bunch of holes in the "metal" that's left when trying to weld it.  (nope)

Can you save the hubs for the future?

I suppose I could. I still have both of the old hubs here that I could throw back on if I decide to sell it or tow it to the scrap yard.

I was actually considering leaving the new hubs on there as a selling point for someone who might want to buy it and repair the frame.

But then I also have tires on it that are only about 2 years old. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with it.

Who knows?  (shrug)

We'll see how it all plays out.

OK then I might have to rely on my State Farm road assist.  But I could always “Let Henry haul it”.
