Title: Using Wasted Space in My Boat
Post by: Curt on April 15, 2015, 10:35:23 AM
My G3 has a step up to the front deck that stretches the width of the boat, sort of.

It starts at the side of the console and runs to the other side of the boat. It's great for getting onto the front deck, but it's completely wasted space, since it's completely closed.

I'm looking for ideas to help me use that space, instead of just stepping on it. For example, I wish it had a lid of some kind that could be opened up to provide storage under it. Or maybe even add a cup holder to the left side of it for my passenger, since there is only one cup holder and it's on the driver side.

Suggestions??

I think if it was mine, I would put the lid on it for storage.  Wouldn't think it would be hard to convert.

If one of these would fit, might be nice...  http://www.boatoutfitters.com/custom-boat-glove-box

Curt, I'd call the mfg and see what is under it.  It may be full of floatation and not be able to be hollowed out.  If it is empty then by all means cut the top off and put a lid on it.  My boat has a step but it is a storage/cooler.  I use it for storage as I don't take anything but water with me and I drink it at "room temp."

Thanks @Jig Man. I was planning on calling them to see what's under it. so I will definitely do that  (y)

If there's no foam, it'll definitely become a storage area of some type  (yes)

G3 seems to be intent on squashing any of my ideas for customizing my boat. Every single thing I have ever asked them about, they have told me no.

I heard back from them today about cutting the step open to add storage and they said they couldn't recommend doing it because there are supports under it to keep it from collapsing when it gets stepped.

I guess my next step is to call them and ask them for a copy of the prints for that part of the boat, so I can see where those supports are, which would help me to avoid cutting them.

They said no to a recessed foot pedal for the TM.

No to a jackplate.

And no to the storage in the step.  (fp)

Bring the boat.   I have a sawzall and I'm a "Gitter Done" man.  (yes)

The only thing that I would be concerned about is hull warranty?  What will they still cover if you made mods?  (hmm)

Not really sure, @Jimmy RodandReel. My guess is that if I cut into that step, it won't void the warranty on the hull, since it's not a structural part of the boat.

As for adding a jackplate, I believe that might get me in trouble with the hull warranty. I also believe if I cut into the front deck and install a recessed TM tray, it might void the warranty too.  (fp)

Kind of a pain in the butt for me when it comes to making some of the mods I want to make, especially in light of the fact that the newer G3s come with a recessed TM tray from the factory.

Unfortunately, there is no new boat anywhere in my future, unless someone wants to buy one for me  (nope)

And as for G3, they no longer make the HP series of boats, so I probably won't buy another G3 unless they start making them again, or if they give the Eagle series a pad-style hull, like the HP series had.

So your cup holder idea is a no? That seams easy enough and would be used. maybe one on both ends. At least if the glove box idea is a no.

I need to get back with them and find out where I can cut into this thing, so I can at least add a cup holder.  (yes)

How wide is the step?
Could you cut a hole and put a lid like this in there?

Might even consider putting it into the vertical face of the step.....
