Title: Braided Line
Post by: Treeman12 on February 07, 2015, 07:21:29 AM
I had back-to-back heavy fish break my 30# braid on the strike last summer.

I thought maybe it was 2 big pike but was throwing square bill crank baits into a stump field.  After the second strike/break I almost threw the whole dang rod in the water.  My wife calls it "My least finest hour" since I lit the lake up with profanity... (no)

I haven't thrown it since...  Someone told me I needed a special knot for braid or it will break.  I have always tied an improved cinch knot my whole life.

???

Do you wet it before cinching it down?

Yep I did

Braid requires something other than the improved clinch knot.

When I used to use braid, I used the Palomar knot with no problems whatsoever.

Now I no longer use braid, so knots aren't a problem  ;D

I have changed all my reels to mono and one with fluoro, which have never let me down.  Sure would like to see the fish that broke the line though!  :'l   Thanks guys...

I use braid a lot.  I started using Power Pro several year ago.  I have tried some others but keep going back to PP.  What I have found with braid is limbs and rocks are very hard on it.  The knot that I use on braid is the same knot I use on all lines.  It is called the 16/20 or Pitzen knot.  I haven't had breakoffs with braid on hook sets.  I have straightened out hooks on A-rig hook sets so that I have had to loosen my drag with fishing them.

You're exactly right. Braid and rocks is a recipe for disaster. For whatever reason, it just doesn't handle rocks well at all.

I fish mono on all but one or two rods. Those two rods have fluorocarbon on them.

Quit giving away all of my secrets. I think you are my un-announced partner or something. (hmm)

I've heard some good things about P line. Maybe I'll give it a try this coming season. Although I really like Sufix Siege. A Lot!!

I use 10 -20 lb braid in all my spinning rods using a floro leader via an albright knot most of the time. For baitcasters I only use braid in heavy vegetation with 65 lb plus and have found the palamar knot works best. I have found that the lighter lines dig in to the spool (baitcaster) under strain and backlashes are a real pain to pick out so for me any advantages are lost.
For squarebills I like 20lb floro or hybrid on a long medium heavy fast action  rod.

Yep... the digging in problem is a real pain in the butt. And when you backlash braid, you might as well sit down for 15 minutes to pick it out  ::)

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.   (yes)  (yes)

Plus.......when you set the hook on a good fish(Stump) the line digs in and without fail the next cast will come back right at your feet OR the backlash from heck is going to happen.

If you like the Albright knot, try the Alberto for attaching leaders.  It's as good and not nearly as time consuming as the Albright.

I fished braid for as long as I recall.  The Palomar knot will fix you up.  Check for frays from your sinker, especially if you re using something other than lead.  As mentioned rocks will fray it as well.   The correct Rod is paramount to not killing yourself with braid.  If the rod tip is real stiff you'll hate braid for casting.   I can throw a small hollow body frog a long way on 60 pound braid.

You don't want mono where I fish braid, that is unless you want your heart broken.

I took this picture on Guntersville.  The first hole is where a fish missed my rat, the second is where he hit it and the third and drag mark is where I turned him and drug him out of about four foot of grass matted over.   Imagine dragging an eight pounder out of this stuff along with another 15 pounds or so of grass.  Trust me braid is a huge advantage.

For that kind of fishing, you're absolutely right. Braid is the way to go.

But I do little or no fishing like that. So braid isn't spooled on any of my reels!

I haven't seen a mat of grass like that since I played football...lol. Up here there a very few lakes with weeds, let alone stuff like that!  Yet another reason to move south...

I flat out gave up on braided line... sucks digging out ratnest...  I learned the lesson early to use a palomar knot with braid.  I went back to mono myself.  Stren 12lb on every rod i own except my spinning rod... stren 10lb.  its the most reliable line i have every used.

Amazing isn't it?  The old standby, Stren, works great for me also.   (hmm)

I use Stren on my spinning gear... 10 lb. test and 8 lb. test, depending on the setup.

On my baitcasters, Sufix Siege gets the nod on most of them. I still use some Berkley Big Game on a few rods too, in 15 lb. for a few and 20 or 25 lb. on my big topwater rod.

I must be the oddball - I use Power Pro with the improved clinch with no issues, even in the riprap on Lake Michigan.  I do check and retie periodically, but really haven't had any problems.

You're right. You are the oddball  (yes) (giggle)

In all seriousness, though, I have never heard of anyone using the improved clinch knot with braid (without having knot slippage problems) or not having trouble with their braid fraying and breaking around rocks  (hmm)

I use braid on everything, but I also use a mono or flouro leader on everything.  I usually tie a Slim Beauty to attach the braid to the leader.

I use a Palomar knot, well wetted, with braid.  No knot breakoffs.  If I have a mono or floro leader a use a well wetted uni to uni.  No knot breakoffs.

I can't use a uni to uni on a lot of my rigs.  If fishing 50lb braid and 80lb Flouro leader, a uni to uni won't go through the guides.  Uni to uni is good up to about 20lb leader though.

Agreed @aussiebasser  My leaders are on dropshots, 6 lb floro to 40 lb braid for Lake Erie smallmouth.

Your not the only oddball.  I use braid on most of my reels except for shaky head fishing.   To me its easier all around.  When I do get a birdnest its easy to pick out, and I have used the same line for two years on a couple of reels.   Power Pro is my favorite.  50 lb or 60 lb.

I use Sufix 832 braid with a P-Line fluorocarbon leader.  I use the biggest braid I can get which helps with the digging, I fill my spool with cheap mono and only use about 75 yards of braid which also helps.  Hook sets with a braid/fluoro are hands down the best.  I use the alberto knot to join my braid to other lines and to my knowledge I've never lost a  fish due to knot failure!  This is typically how I set up my flipping/pitching combos.

For everything else I use Sufix Elite Mono, best line ever IMO!!
