Title: Cull Tags - Cable vs. Ball Chain
Post by: Curt on November 14, 2017, 07:21:46 PM
Looking for some opinions here.

I have a cull system that uses the old style ball chains, with a plastic tube covering them.

They have held up very well, but I get super annoyed with them because they tend to get tangles with each other because the plastic tubing over them is fairly stiff, and holds a curve all the time. It's not unusual for me to open the livewell and find two or three fish all tangled up and unable to move about freely.

Do any of you have or have any of you used a system with the flexible steel cables, instead of the ball chain?

If so, are they any better or do they still occasionally get tangled?

I've also seen several systems made with rubber instead of steel cables or ball chains. Any opinions on these?

I might be wrong but I would tend to think the more flexible the tethers are, the more likely they would be to tangle.  (hmm) Just my thought off the top of my head.  (shrug)

It would seem so, but in the case of mine, the stiffness causes the curve to stay in them, which leads to them tangling more.  (fp)

Get your...or your wife's hairdryer out and heat the tubing up and straighten it out.

My current clips use braided poly lines instead of ball chain or cable, and yes they tend to tangle, so when I remake my new ones using the clips from the other post I'll put shrink over the braided line, cause I like the light weight of the braided line.

I'll give that a try. Thanks. But my guess is that they will get stiff again in the cold weather, with a curve in them. We'll see  (shrug)
