Title: Jimmy (& anyone else) ? your favorite reel lubes?
Post by: RedAllison on February 20, 2015, 11:42:27 PM
Jimmy since you do it professionally I assume you've tried many and have some favorite reel lubes, what are they?

For me I used alot of various ones over the decades but for about the last decade now I've sworn by Royal Purple's reel/gun synthetic oil (with Synerlec I think they call it?). Grease wise, I think any decent grease will work but I've had a lil tub of blue reel grease from Penn and that combo has worked really well for me. (Years ago when synthetics first came onto the reel market I tried several but they didn't mix well with various greases and would actually turn into "wax"! So you gotta be careful what you combine with what, some don't play well with others.)

My "routine" is to strip the old line off a reel, then pull it apart and pull the bearings out of that reel, drop those bearings into lighter fluid to clean the old oil and grime out, then let them air dry for awhile. While that's going on I clean the gears, worm drive, pawl etc with a q-tip and then replace the grease on those pieces with new grease. Then after the bearings are clean and dry I drop them into the RP Oil and then put the reel back together, respool new line and then they are ready for another season!

LOL remember the old days with the round ABUs? Chunk and wind, chunk and wind, once it started makin some noise, dip it into the lake and then continue to chunk and wind again!  (giggle)

RA......Yes I have tried many many many different brands/type of lubes over the years and I have tried all the fad lubes too.
Red Rocket
Yellow Rocket
Reel Speed
Shimano
Whale and frog spit
Boca
Hot Sauce (Total JUNK) (yes)
Etc, Etc, Etc.
But the reel oil that has always proformed the best for my customers and me has been the Penn Synthetic reel oil. Its not crazy expensive and it has very good performance qualities for today reels. It just plain works for any of the higher speed bearings.
I also use the Ardent reel butter for areas that need a slightly heavier oil for things like the main shaft bearing and the level wind pawl. These are both low speed areas that work better with a heavier oil.

Grease........Grease=Gears.  Yes I have tried about all of them too and like you I have come to like and use

Only I buy it by the 1pnd tub.  This is a great grease and works very well.

Here is a simple chart that was posted on the interwebz many years ago that has helped a lot of people and their choice of oils

One more tip you folks using Quantum Hot Sauce..........STOP NOW!!! The crap is junk. It will gunk up your reel and bearings and turn to a hard grease like stuff that really degrades the performance of your reel and bearings.

Now that you mention it Jimmy, I'm purty sure Hot Sauce is the oil I found to "turn to wax" but thought it was maybe a chemical reaction with grease. Whatever it was it sure was CRAP and I never used it again!  (whew)

Once I got my Citicas cleaned of all the old crap in them when I got them, I used the Ardent system for relube, and it is night and day.  It always amazes me at the amount of grease the reel makers pack into a new reel - cut that amount to 25% and it is correct.

I do mine annually, so the Ardent is pretty cost effective.

They do this to get them through the warranty period.    (yes)

Jimmy, is this the penn reel oil you use?  Your review convinced me to give it a try.....just want to make sure it's the right stuff before I hit the buy button.
