Title: 998 and 898
Post by: Bullet3119 on January 24, 2015, 06:04:26 PM
I have a 998 and 898, Jimmy and I put them on over the winter. I will take any advice or tips I can get for these units. I am completely new to side scan and down imaging. Thanks in advance!

I am still learning with my 998 as well but have a lot of useful information on YouTube from Doug Vahrenberg.  He is the hummingbird guru. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC720StZgdcrn-Ldn7vY4v1g here is the address to his YouTube channel.

Thanks for the link. I have a 798, the smaller SI unit, on my console. But I've never put enough time into learning how to use it properly. Maybe this year...

I have two of the hummingbird 898 on my boat. I've put them both on in the last two years. But my son that fish is college fishing tournaments knows more about how to interpret side imaging than I do. So rather than learn it I just go fishing with him LOL! I hope to learn more this year. Actually I have learned quite a bit by watching the videos that Doug has on YouTube. And I found some things on some local lakes that I never knew existed. I also have figured out that if I run my Trolling Motor for a certain amount of time and thentake my foot off the power that I can actually do side imaging and practically 360 by just turning the Trolling Motor without power as it glides.

Doug is the best to learn from hands down.
I've got a 598 and it's amazing what you see down there. I am going to get one with a big screen soon.

Here's a tip. you have many different screen views to use. Scroll through them and turn off the ones you don't think you will need. Next go through the remaining views and write them down in the order they scroll by. Now directly above the power button there are three shortcut buttons.  You can select 3 screen views that are your favorites. Scroll up to one of your favorite views and then pick one of those buttons and hold it down for 2 seconds. It will set that button for a shortcut to go directly to that view when you want it instead of having to scroll through all the views to find it.

Now take it a step further. Look at your list of views and realize that by choosing your shortcut buttons you can set them so that when one is pressed, if you hit the view or or exit button once you can have a shortcut option for three views with only 2 key strokes. Simply hit the shortcut button and you have that view, hit the exit or view button and you get the view in the que either right in front or behind the shortcut button. That's 3 shortcut views with 2 keystrokes.

If you do that with all three shortcut buttons you can access 9 views easily.

I think the screen scroll speed is a choice between 1 & 10. For best side image returns I think it is suggested to set the screen scroll speed at approximately the same speed as the boat is moving . For instance if the boat is moving a 4 mph then set the screen scroll speed at 4 for side imaging.

Great info @getfished . Thanks for sharing this.

It's funny. I'm a computer geek by trade, but when I get in my boat it seems the last thing I want to do is spend hours learning my electronics and all the ins and outs  (dk)

He showed me this while fishing together a few weeks ago. Really cool!
