Title: Jig Weedguard question
Post by: dchance on March 05, 2015, 12:03:46 PM
I pour my own jigs and use the traditional fiber weedguard. I have seen some jigs use a single strand of thick mono or similar as a weedguard in place of the fiber strands.
What are the options of material to use?
I have heard mono, surflon, heck I have even heard weed eater line.
I really don't want to modify an of my molds to do it either.
anyone with experience and advice?

On my molds that have a smaller cavity and take a smaller weed guard I like to use 90# braided cable like surflon or sevelon.  If you want to try it in some of the cavities that take larger weed guard you can put duct tape over the slots to take up room and avoid the flashing.

OK thanks. so put duct tape on the weedguard hole to and then just drill the hole out or what?

No NO drilling.  Just put it over the slot on both sides of the mold.  Let it fill up the space so the sevelon will stay put.  Depending on how large the weed guard slot is, you may have to use more than one layer of duct tape.  It only takes one layer on my poison tail mold for the 1/8 head since it takes fg 9.

That only works if you aren't going to paint with powder and then bake them.  Otherwise you'd have to plug the weed guard hole with a dowel or pin then drill it out for the single strand.

so you mold the sevelon into the head?

if so does the nylon coating get affected during the baking process of the powder coat paint?

Yes it would.  I only mold it in on the heads that I'm not painting.  I have molded heads with a solid wire, painted, removed the solid wire and glued in the  coated.  There really isn't a good way that I have found.  That is why I do it on the ones that I don't paint.

dang. I guess there is always the option to pour the full head without a weedguard option and drill a proper sized hole. tedious but with a dremel you could probably do it ok. not ideal though.

No it isn't ideal but if you are only doing for yourself and not selling then it won't be that bad.  Since you have been on the puter a lot today, I'm guessing no school in Rolla today.

Ha ha. no we have school. :-[  I teach computers just have some down time while kids are working on projects and assignments.

I see that large mono is cheap, I wonder if that would work as well. I see the diameter of some Big Game mono 175lb test is like. .033mm how does that compare with the surflon etc.

What I have on hand is 90# Malon 7 it is 0.05450.   I believe the 93# Surflon is even thicker.
